In Sub-Saharan Africa, health care coverage tends to be deficient for the poor, largely due to elements such as the lack of appropriate health workers (because of limited supply and/or high levels of absenteeism), geographic and institutional mal-distributions, and the social distance (or incompatibility) between health workers and clients. As the most skilled health care workers prefer urban and more lucrative regions and sectors to work in, poorer rural areas experience lower quality and productivity of health services, closure of hospital wards, increased waiting times, lack of social compatibility between patient and provider, or substitution with persons lacking the required skills for performing critical interventions. The focus on strengthening the health workforce in Sub-Saharan Africa is a key objective of HHA, and this page provides a wide range of information on HRH (country snapshots, assistance provided, news) as well as an opportunity to interact on all aspects related to HRH (Blog and Community Of Practice).
